Welcome back to another edition of our classroom blog!

Here’s what we’ve been working on:

Reading:  We’ve been reading about popcorn and learning about compound words and vocabulary.  Next week we will begin our Super Switch where our second graders will be traveling to other rooms with their group and working on different reading activities.  This will be for 30 minutes every day.

Math:  One and two step word problems will be our focus for awhile.  We will be working on fact fluency all year.

Writing:  We continue to work on small moments.

Social Studies/Science:  We are finishing up learning about Communities.  Next week we will begin to  study Landforms.  Be watching for a note asking for your help to make clay for your second grader. We will use this clay to make a landform relief project.  Also, your second grader will need to bring in a shoe box top to make our project. Shoe box tops will need to be here by Thursday, October 27. I’d like to say THANKS in advance for helping with this project.

Things to be aware of:

* FYI:  We have a new afternoon recess time.  We go to recess from 1:45 – 2:05.

* If you will be coming to school for a party this year, remember to make sure you have done the procedure for a background check.  They check at the door when you come in.  If you need more information, don’t be afraid to contact the office.

Our V.I.P.’s:

Grace VanKoevering was our V.I.P. last week.  She has 6 people in her family.  Her favorite color is blue.  Her favorite food is spaghetti.  Her favorite restaurant is Red Robin. Soccer is her favorite sport. She likes to have sleep overs with her friends.  She likes to go to Splash Pads with her family.  Her favorite animals are dogs and cats.  Her favorite ice cream flavor is mint chip.  If she was the President of the United States, her new rule would be:  Anyone going into second grade MUST be in Ms Scott’s class!

Shaun Bruinsma is our V.I.P. this week.  His favorite color is blue.  He has 6 people in his family.  His favorite food is mac and cheese.  His favorite restaurant is Texas Roadhouse.  Football is his favorite sport.  He likes to play in his backyard with his friends.  He likes to go out to eat with his family.  His favorite animal is a snake.  His favorite ice cream flavor is vanilla.  If he was the President of the United States, his new rule would be:  Alward can have a pool – one for every classroom!

Joke of the day:  Why do soccer players do well in school?
