Welcome back!
It is great to be settled in and working hard!
Here are some things we’ve been working on:
Reading: We have been doing an author study on Dav Pilkey. His books are very funny and his illustrations are great.
Math: We will be working on word problems for a long time. We also will be working on fact fluency for addition and subtraction. We will be working on this all year. We take our “mad minute” tests on Fridays. The goal is to get 30 problems done in one minute by the end of the year. I will send the tests home so you can monitor their progress.
Writing: We continue to work on small moments. Next week we will be working on making story maps to help us write our stories.
Social Studies: “Communities” will be our focus for another week. We have discussed “urban” communities so far. Next we will study “suburban” and “rural” communities.
Spelling: We will begin our spelling on Monday, October 3. Words that students will be expected to know how to spell will go home on Monday. The tests will always be on Friday. Our first word list will concentrate on the short vowel sounds.
Things you might want to know:
* Please remember that Library is always on Thursday. Students may bring their books back any time, but, please help your second grader to remember the books on Thursday. If they want to keep a book for another week, all they need to do is bring it back and Mrs. Fellows will simply check it out again for them. Thanks for your help!
* Early Release will be on Friday, October 14.
* Walk-a-thon is on Friday, October 21.

Our Very Important Student (the V.I.P.) this week was Brayden VerStrate! His favorite color is green. His favorite restaurant is Sara’s Pizza. When he grows up, he wants to be a professional fisherman. He has 4 people in his family. His favorite vacation is going to Yogi Bear campsite. His favorite season is winter. His favorite food is steak. In his spare time he likes to go fishing. If he was the President of the United States, his new rule would be: Everyone must eat at Sara’s Pizza!
Joke of the day: What do you call a student with a dictionary in his pocket?
