Merry Christmas!  I hope you are enjoying this special time of year!

 

Here is what we have been working on:

Reading:  Our focus is on non-fiction right now.

Writing and Social Studies:  We are reading and writing about non-fiction as we study the History of Hudsonville.

Math:  We are in the process of taking the Unit 2 test.  There are many sections.  After that, we will study measurement and shapes.

Kailen McMann was our V.I.P. two weeks ago.  Her favorite color is blue.  Mint chocolate chip is her favorite ice cream flavor.  Her favorite restaurant is Red Robin.  Gymnastics is her favorite sport.  She has 4 people in her family.  They have a pet cat at home.  Her favorite family vacation is going to Florida.  She loves to play outside with friends.  She loves to play games with her family.  Christmas is her favorite holiday.  If she was the President of the United States, her new rule would be:  Helicopters will be able to land on houses and they will only cost one penny.

Bethany Karel was our V.I.P. last week.  Her favorite color is blue-green.  Her favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate.  Her favorite restaurant is Chinese Buffet.  Her favorite sports are soccer, hockey, and basketball.  There are 8 people in her family.  They have a cat and kittens at their house.  Her favorite family vacation is going to Kentucky.  She likes to play tag with friends.  She likes to have “Share time” with her family.  Her favorite holiday is Christmas.  If she was the President of the United States, her new rule would be:  Everyone would have to ride a horse or  dolphin.

His favorite flavor of ice cream is mint chocolate chip.  His favorite restaurant is Mr. Burger.  Football is his favorite sport.  There are 8 people in his family.  He has two pet dogs.  His favorite family vacation was going to Hawaii.  He likes to play football with his friends.  He loves to spend time with his family.  His favorite board game is Trouble.  Christmas is his favorite holiday.  If he was the President of the United States, his new rule would be:  Everybody has to eat ice cream all year!

Math:  We continue to work on word problems.  We are starting to learn 2 digit addition using “new groups above”.

Reading:  We are still having fun with Super Switch.

Writing:  We continue with small moments.

His favorite thing to do with his family is go to fun places.  His favorite thing to do with friends is to play lava tag.  His favorite holiday is Christmas.  His favorite restaurant is Olive Garden.  If he was the President of the United States, his new rule would be:  Everybody has to eat candy!

Happy Halloween!

Here’s what we have been working on:

Math:  We finished up Unit 1.  There were a lot of word problems in Unit 1!  We are now moving into Unit 2 where we will be working on place value and making “quick draws” of hundreds, tens and ones.

Writing:  We continue to work on small moments.

Reading:  We are having a lot of fun going to our “super switch” groups.  Of course, our focus is on reading strategies.

Science:  We are finishing up with our study of Landforms.

Spelling:  Due to the Halloween Party and Early Release on Friday, we will NOT be getting new words next week nor will their be a test on Friday.

 

Halloween!  Yes, our party is on Monday, October 31.  I know there are some questions about costumes.  If their costume is the kind that they can wear all day – then go ahead.  However, if they need to change into something, or put some things on, students will be able to go to the bathroom ahead of time to get ready.  I hope this helps.

Welcome back to another edition of our classroom blog!

Here’s what we’ve been working on:

Reading:  We’ve been reading about popcorn and learning about compound words and vocabulary.  Next week we will begin our Super Switch where our second graders will be traveling to other rooms with their group and working on different reading activities.  This will be for 30 minutes every day.

Math:  One and two step word problems will be our focus for awhile.  We will be working on fact fluency all year.

Writing:  We continue to work on small moments.

Social Studies/Science:  We are finishing up learning about Communities.  Next week we will begin to  study Landforms.  Be watching for a note asking for your help to make clay for your second grader. We will use this clay to make a landform relief project.  Also, your second grader will need to bring in a shoe box top to make our project. Shoe box tops will need to be here by Thursday, October 27. I’d like to say THANKS in advance for helping with this project.

Welcome back!

It is great to be settled in and working hard!

Here are some things we’ve been working on:

Reading:  We have been doing an author study on Dav Pilkey.  His books are very funny and his illustrations are great.

Math:  We will be working on word problems for a long time.  We also will be working on fact fluency for addition and subtraction.  We will be working on this all year.  We take our “mad minute” tests on Fridays.  The goal is to get 30 problems done in one minute by the end of the year.  I will send the tests home so you can monitor their progress.

Writing:  We continue to work on small moments.  Next week we will be working on making story maps to help us write our stories.

Social Studies:  “Communities” will be our focus for another week.  We have discussed “urban” communities so far.  Next we will study “suburban” and “rural” communities.

Spelling:  We will begin our spelling on Monday, October 3.  Words that students will be expected to know how to spell will go home on Monday.  The tests will always be on Friday.  Our first word list will concentrate on the short vowel sounds.

Things you might want to know:

*  Please remember that Library is always on Thursday.  Students may bring their books back any time, but, please help your second grader to remember the books on Thursday.  If they want to keep a book for another week, all they need to do is bring it back and Mrs. Fellows will simply check it out again for them.  Thanks for your help!

* Early Release will be on Friday, October 14.

Walk-a-thon is on Friday, October 21.
